WEEK 4 - Discussion 1-2

Discussion question 1

Situation No. 1
John is an active member of school organizations. He has a lot of talents to share and ideas to contribute to their club. Aside from that, he is known for his good looks, neatness, and tidiness. However, these seemingly likeable characteristics became the very reasons for rumors and gossips-- that he is a member of the LGBTQ+I community. This hurt him so much that he almost wanted to drop from schooling.

I think that this is sad, unfair and discriminatory because people should not judge one's identity through their characteristics. Personality traits should not be gender-specific or stereotyped as everyone can develop them. Stereotyping John just for having likeable traits that seem feminine does not indicate that he is gay. It is problematic that some people still think that men aren't allowed to be feminine and that women can't be masculine. Using the word "gay" should also not be used as an insult. Even if John is really a member of the LGBTQ+ community, we should accept it and not insult him for being a part of it. I would say that we should all stop these societal norms once and for all, as it only hurts people even more. It is already the 21st century, shouldn't we have progressed from these problematic traditions already?

Situation No. 2
Erica is a Grade 11 student. Although she is quite plump, she is undeniably pretty. Since she is sociable, she became popular and gained a lot of friends in school. She is just an average student but having a crush on her top one classmate urged her to spend late nights studying to keep up with him. However, all her efforts still fell short and she did not make it to the cut of students with honors. Because of this, she developed an eating disorder that caused her to lose huge weight. She also started to have breakouts. With these, the then friendly Erica became aloof and self-conscious.

Just like Erica, we all have insecurities and we deal with them in different ways. These insecurities we face may root from our desire to fit in the standards of society, where one has to have the perfect body. Social media plays an important role as this is where we all see those people who we think are far better than us just because they fit in the beauty standards or have good grades. However, we can overcome our insecurities by accepting them. Although it may be hard at first, but practicing self-approval is what we all need. Erica needs to understand that what people think of her are not as important to what she thinks of herself. She should not compare herself to others because they can never be her as every human being is born unique. So, Erica needs to embrace her full self to overcome her insecurities. Although insecurities would still come back, it would not bother us so much when we have fully embraced our imperfections and accepted ourselves. Soon, Erica will regain her confidence, she just needs to trust herself and believe that she willl be okay.
