WEEK 4 - Written Work
WRITTEN WORK: Answer the following questions in not less than 5 sentences each. Be specific with your answers and elaborate.
1. What were the most difficult challenges you have encountered in life?
One of the biggest and most difficult challenges I have encountered was when I moved to United States of America. It was nerve-wracking and scary for me because it was a brand-new experience. It felt like I was going to have a restart in life since we lived in a very small town where we do not really know a lot of people. Because of this, I had encountered another challenge: my confidence and self-esteem dropped. I moved there during 8th grade, which is the end of middle school, which was hard for me since everyone in my school already know each other and it felt like I was the odd one out. Although I managed to finish the school year with some friends and good relationships with the faculty, I still kind of felt alienated because I was unable to catch up to the “trends” and “culture” of my schoolmates. My fear of getting bullied and judged easily became the reason why I had low confidence and self-esteem in talking to others that time. I had also experienced a little bit of school phobia at the start of the year.
2. How were you able to overcome these challenges?
Although it took me months to finally feel comfortable living in the United States of America, I had overcome these challenges by trying to put myself out there. To conquer my fear of how others think about me, I decided to simply not care about it. I was reminded by my ESL teacher that despite my desire to please everyone in school, it is impossible to do it since we all have different views and preferences. Because of her encouragement, I finally realized that it was true, I so decided to join the school Jazz band, since I loved to play musical instruments and I got to play the piano for the band during the winter and spring band concert. I also competed in the school’s talent show and won first place. These are some of the things I did to overcome these challenges. After doing these activities, I finally started feeling welcomed and that I was also able to gain new friends who I keep in touch with.
3. How did these challenges help you to be a better person? How do you think this would prepare you to your adulthood?
These challenges shaped me into becoming a better person because I was finally able to fully embrace changes. I became more confident with myself and that I do not feel like I am being watched anymore. This would help me prepare me for adulthood because I know that acceptance is essential in growing up. It may be hard to accept changes so fast since we are all uncertain of the outcomes that will happen. However, I do know that instead of being fearful of change, learning to adapt will help us get through life without having a lot of regrets.
